Jeanette Aw is Li Xiang, a young tai-chi master with the unfortunate problem of body odour. The man of her dreams is JK Ma (Allan Wu) whom she saves from some unruly rascals with her tai-chi.

Youthful Jeanette has played swinging singles in Beautiful Connection, A Child’s Hope II, Spice Siblings and The Champion, with the exception of Holland V where her character Jingjing was married to Ah Ming.

The Tai-Chi Lass will continue filming till Mid November. Watch for it next year!

UrbanWire catches up with sugar and spice MediaCorp TV actress JEANETTE AW, whose fame is rising too fast too furious.

While artistes from Kym Ng to Evelyn Tan defected from MediaCorp TV to rival station SPH MediaWorks a few years ago, Jeanette Aw bucked the trend. She quit Channel U (citing difficulty in coping with studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS) as the reason), joined Hype Records and then officially signed on as a MediaCorp artiste May 2002. She received flak and brickbats but, heck, it was possibly the best move in our local entertainment industry in recent times.

Consider the evidence – the year she joined MediaCorp TV, Jeanette won the Best Newcomer award, bagged a Top 10 Female Most Popular award at the Star Awards last year and even earned a Best Actress nomination for her memorable role as Mo Jingjing in Holland V. Currently, she’s seen in drama serial Spice Siblings alongside leading man Tay Ping Hui and looking drop dead gorgeous in the new SK Jewellery advertising campaign.

With awards and diamonds to flaunt, not forgetting an Honours degree in Theatre Studies from NUS, pretty things are on the horizon for Jeanette. As the interview begins, the slim and fair-skinned actress politely declines eating her plate of fruits on the table. Instead, she looks intently at this reporter and puts on a sweet million-dollar smile. Seriously, how can we not like her?

Moving On
The road to Caldecott Hill has never been smooth for the actress who turns 25 on June 28. She’s been called betrayer and labelled as an ingrate by her detractors. And it’s been almost 2 years since Jeanette made that rewarding career 101 move.

Yet, one gets the feeling she really just wants to move on. “I was not really bothered by it. I received constructive criticism from my colleagues and I got friends who were very honest with me and they gave me views on what I was lacking. Basically I had support from all areas of my life. I guess those criticism that were meant to destroy me, I did not take into consideration,” she explains in a measured tone.

V-ictory Role

Not only has Jeanette moved on from the controversy, she has acted in a few drama serials for Channel 8 (Beautiful Connection, True Heroes) in a short span of time. Her most unforgettable role to date and presumably breakthrough role is her ditzy and innocent Mo Jingjing character immortalised in the award winning drama Holland V last year. In a strange twist of irony, the youngest child in a family of 5 started to win fans’ sympathy with that endearing Jingjing’s sha xiao [goofy smile in Mandarin] that got many to sympathise with her character.

“Jingjing is someone with no ambition and hidden motives. If you want food, she will give it to you. She is just very nice. At first, it was difficult because sometimes I would be too alert and aware, but slowly it became easier to portray her,” the 163cm tall actress recalls fondly of her character’s innocence.

In the 125-episode drama, Jingjing is often blessed with luck. Does the character’s luck rub off for Jeanette in real life? “Well, I am glad that I have been blessed in my school and work. I get to enjoy the things I do and I even gotten a job before I graduated. In a sense, I am very lucky,” she exclaims in English.

All Rise
To describe Jeanette as an overachiever is an understatement. While her peers back were struggling with tuition classes or playing 5-stones, hopscotch or Game Boy, the feisty lass spent her time doing back-flips during gym classes in primary school, played the saxophone in her pubescent years and danced ballet right till her NUS days.

Perhaps that precocious impatience to try and excel in several areas – or kiasu-ism [Hokkien for afraid to lose] if you ask me – has impacted Jeanette’s acting, which has garnered her a bagful of awards and established her on the fast track to A-list stardom.

Net Net (her nickname) puts her ambition in perspective: “I love performing and I guess I naturally evolve into acting from dancing, since dancing is also performing. I have this huge passion to perform.”

It turns out to be a unique case of art imitating life. Jeanette plays the ambitious and spunky Wen Qing on Spice Siblings, a role that resonates with her real self in some ways. “My character wants to be a model, that is why she is ambitious. I would say I am like her in a sense that I am transparent. If I am angry, happy or grumpy, I will show it,” the bilingual actress says.

Daredevil
Jeanette, whose real name is Ou Yanping, remains focussed and takes a reality check despite her meteoric rise in fame. “I will take things slowly and 1 step at a time. I would like to take on roles that can show my versatility. Roles like those in period dramas,” the dainty actress adds.

Don’t misunderstand Jeanette as a go-getter who’s all work and no play because judging from her body language and occasional giggles during the interview, she’s very much childlike, if not lively. Halfway during the interview, she even engaged in a mini repartee with Tay Ping Hui, who plays her brother and erm, lover (we won’t into details here) in Spice Siblings.

You might think that that’s not enough to show a less serious side to her. And so she provides proof, recalling an incident about 2 years ago.

“My friend and I were at Al Amin restaurant [located opposite Beauty World, a 15-min walk from our campus] and we ordered this huge murtabak [crispy Indian pastry with meat]. We thought we could not finish it and then my friend who understood Malay overheard this group of Malay guys near us laughing and saying we could not finish it. It was like a dare to us and so we finished it in the end!”

From devouring murtabak to nasi lemak [coconut rice with fried condiments made famous in Holland V] and now laksa [noodles in coconut gravy and the central subject of Spice Siblings], one can easily discern that Jeanette is constantly, for the lack of a better word, hungry for success. For now, she just has to settle for the plate of fruits on her table.

【荷兰村】的傻妹晶晶（欧萱饰）入围最佳女主角！欧萱听闻，笑得合不拢嘴…其实晶晶这个角色本来不是找她演的…

入行1年多得最佳新人；第二年竟然入围最佳女主角…这就是欧萱的星途。

“Surprised!呵呵…很意外，呵…”
欧萱是在今天为新剧【辣兄辣妹】做造型时，从记者口中得知入围最佳女主角的好消息，高兴地直笑。

第一时间告诉妈妈，妈妈的反应竟然是：“吓，那么好啊？”然后又是一直笑。
有没有准备庆祝？“哎呀，没有啦…”

欧萱的妈妈是很支持女儿的，百多集的【荷兰村】，她每一集都帮女儿录下来呢。

去年凭【九层糕】的初登场勇夺最佳新人时，依然有人觉得欧萱“样子高傲”，还调侃她在该剧必须靠别人幕后配音。不到一年时间，欧萱接连演了2部剧【真心英雄】和【荷兰村】，不只现场收音，还得到热烈回响，大人小孩都喜欢她。

“走在街上，会有一些auntie过来跟我说，你啊，害得我很惨…（吓？）你哭害我也跟着哭！哈哈，听了很感动，一个角色可以牵动大家的情绪… ”

的确，自从【荷兰村】登场，观众就跟着晶晶的傻笑、眼泪心情起伏，尤其是她跟“小心”（陈泓宇饰）的两小无猜之恋得不到圆满结局，让观众网友又气又急，老是写来电视台投诉！

人气如此之旺，“十大最受欢迎艺人”之奖，欧萱也应该十拿九稳咯！“哈，不知道啊，嗯，可能这部戏很长，100多集呢，大家无论怎么忙也可能会看到一两集咯，所以…呵…”

最佳女主角的竞争对手都是大姐大，声势最旺的还是婉婉大姐陈莉萍！欧萱觉得自己的机会如何？
“嗯，莉萍很努力，经常拍到凌晨，忙到没有时间照顾孩子，加上当时有官司的烦恼，压力很大呢…拍戏时她也很照顾我这个新人，我跟她有很多对手戏，她经常带动我、提点我，让我有机会发挥…剧里的好多大哥大姐也一样很照顾我，很谢谢他们…”

说来说去，就是不肯评定自己的机会如何，唯一确定的是她对“大姐”赞不绝口。

去年得奖作品是金牌监制郭令送的作品，这部【荷兰村】也同样是郭一手提拔，欧萱有什么话说？
“很感谢有这部戏，真的，让观众认识了晶晶，也认识了欧萱，哈。”

为什么郭监制会挑中欧萱来演这个角色？
“哈…其实哦，一开始说戏时，她找我是演燕燕的。我很高兴啊，因为燕燕性格蛮叛逆、最后还不择手段…”

那又怎么会忽然变成饰演傻乎乎的晶晶？
“哈，可能是因为令送在讲述剧情时，有很多好笑的地方，逗得我一直笑个不停…令送忽然觉得我更适合演晶晶！而且…嗯，我还算是新脸孔，蛮适合傻傻不通世故的晶晶…就是这样咯，哈！”

果然傻人有傻福，这样一个讨喜的角色就这样落在欧萱手中！
燕燕这一角色后来由前影后许美珍饰演。

从刚开始被观众指“演技生硬、不自然”到现在大家几乎一面倒的支持，欧萱果真是苦尽甘来咯！

欧萱跟晶晶最相似的，是哪一点？
“我们都一样，容易忘记不愉快的事。（怎么做？）就是不去想咯！”

接下来，欧萱在新剧【辣兄辣妹】中以女主角的姿态，演绎一心要当空姐的辣沙妹，是那种凶巴巴的辣妹。

这是你最想演的吗？
“其实…我最想演的是古装剧，因为我有芭蕾舞、体操和武术的底子，嗯，应该蛮适合古装的， 哈。”

最后来预测影帝…
“谢韶光！”想也不想。
“我一直都觉得他是演技派，这次拍【荷兰村】，我最喜欢现场看他演戏，真的…是好！我看好他，也希望他得！”

As Mo Jingjing, Jeanette Aw has been drawing in the laughs with her character’s disarming simplicity and naivety. But it looks like the actress, who’s been nominated for the Best Actress Award, is having the last laugh.

As Mo Jingjing in Holland V, Jeanette Aw has been capturing the imagination of viewers not with sparkling wit, style nor sassiness.

But with her disarming simplicity, naivety and amusing childlike mannerisms. Her simple-mindedness is at times lovable, other times laughable.

It looks like Jeanette is having the last laugh as playing the sha mei (silly, simple-minded girl) has paid off for the actress who has been an artiste for just over 2 years, in a huge way.

The Star Awards 2002 Newcomer award winner has added yet another nomination to her tiny waist. With her Best Actress nomination in the Star Awards this year, she’s suddenly catapulted into the same league as MediaCorp bigwigs such as Aileen Tan, Jacelyn Tay, Zoe Tay and Chen Liping, her co-star in Holland V.

Jeanette found out about her nomination from a reporter during a styling session for her new Channel 8 drama Spicy Affairs this morning.

Over the phone, we asked the fast-rising newbie on her feelings on her nomination.

“I’m surprised!” she says laughingly.

And when Jeanette broke the good news to her mum, Mrs Aw’s response was that of surprise as well.

Related Jeanette, “My mum said, ‘So good ah?’ and then couldn’t stop laughing.”

Jeanette’s mum has always been very supportive of her career and shows it by helping her to record every single episode of Holland V which the actress would review during filming or dinner breaks.

Does the bright-eyed Jeanette think she shares any similar qualities (God forbid!) with the dim-witted Jingjing?

Chirps Jeanette, “I’m similar to Jingjing in that both of us won’t let unhappy things bother us and we tend to forget them easily.”

Few people know this but Jeanette was originally slated to play the vicious, manipulative Yanyan (played by Cynthia Koh), a role similar to her character of Fan Keke in her debut Channel 8 drama Beautiful Connection which won her the Best Newcomer award last year.

But Kok Len Shoong, Vice President, Chinese Drama, MediaCorp Studios who oversaw the productions of both Beautiful Connection obviously saw a different side of Jeanette which was suitable for the role of Jingjing.

When Len Shoong explained to me the character of Yanyan, I couldn’t stop laughing and she told me that she would give me the role of Jingjing instead.

“Maybe they wanted a fresh-faced actress or maybe they wanted to give me a new challenge.”

The casting has turned out to be spot-on. Viewers from ages as young as 4 to the elderly have taken a liking to the simple-minded, lovable Jingjing. My four-year-old niece, for example, chants the name Jingjing like a mantra whenever the show starts.

“A lot of people (aunties and people in their 30s) have come up to me and lamented, “You make life very difficult for us. Whenever you cry, we also take out our tissue papers.

“It’s very gratifying to know that my acting affects them in such a way,” says Jeanette earnestly.

Jeanette sees the role of Jingjing in Holland V as a blessing and she is very thankful for the opportunity. “Through the 125-epsiode drama (Holland V), viewers have come to accept the character Jingjing and has come to know Ou Xuan better, ” she enthuses .

Jeanette’s chances look bright and her strongest contender seems to be her Holland V co-star Chen Liping.

“I feel that Liping deserves the award… She is a very hardworking actress who has given her all for her role. She has been remarkable in her performance, having to juggle work stress with the pressure of the court case (Slim 10),” Jeanette opines with obvious admiration in her voice.

She adds gratefully: “She has also helped me a lot in the filming of Holland V and has given me a lot of advice, just like many of my co-stars in Holland V have.”

Another of whom is this year’s Best Actor nominee Xie Shaoguang.

“I feel that Shaoguang stands a very high chance. I have always admired his acting abilities. During filming for Holland V, I love to watch him act from the sidelines.”

How about Christopher Lee who plays your big brother in True Heroes?

“Aiyah, everyone is good lah!”

“Is she disappointed that her other co-star Cynthia Koh who plays her scheming sister Yanyan didn’t get nominated?

“Not being nominated isn’t a bad thing. A lot of people also did not get nominated,” comes her straight reply.

What kind of roles would she want to try her hand next?

“I would like to try period dramas so I can put my wushu skills and dance (she used to dance ballet) skills to good use!” says Jeanette.

在一众犀利女人大声吵架、一众阴险男人使计诈骗的大环境中，傻大妹莫晶晶（欧萱饰演）的天真善良又直爽，越发显得讨喜可爱。

下了妆、接受采访的欧萱，畅谈莫晶晶这个人物的性格：“晶晶是个比较单纯、头脑不是很好的人，卖椰浆饭也会找错钱…她很听大姐的话，对感情、事业都没有很大的野心，也不怎么会表达自己的情绪，对爱情没有什么概念。”

“对爱情没什么概念”举例说明－
荷兰村街坊鸡饭佬（姚玟隆饰演）的母亲有意撮合晶晶和鸡饭佬。莫婉婉试探地问傻妹妹：“要不要试试看跟他做朋友？”
晶晶马上眉头一皱，一脸认真：“huh？他是ah zek(福建话，意即形象很不入流的叔辈人物)leh…好啦好啦，我试试看咯，不过不能保证会跟他结婚啊…”

－说起自己的婚姻大事，就像在说试用什么新产品一样，令人莞尔…

欧萱边说边笑，露出两排洁白的牙齿，无论笑容或语气，都是十足的“莫晶晶”…傻气而可爱，但老实说，急性子的记者按捺不住，直问，是受角色影响的吗？

“啊？呵呵，呵呵…其实有一点是受这个戏的影响，毕竟也拍了6个多月嘛…呵呵呵，其实拍到后来，有时导演啊、助导啊都说，诶，怎么你现在说话都像晶晶？呵呵呵…啊，可能也是因为要讲华语啦，我平常习惯讲英语，讲华语的话需要先在脑中翻译过来，会比较慢啦，呵呵呵…”

莫晶晶在戏里是运财童女，常“出真字”，多次帮剧中街坊赢马票。欧萱自己有没有从中得到什么真字灵感？
“呵呵，当然没有，我都没有买马票的习惯…”

加入新传媒后，欧萱的第一部戏是在【九层糕】里演一个性格高傲、持宠生娇的范可可，第一印象不是太讨好。

第二部戏是【真心英雄】里演一个心直口快的护士/女警，非常正面邻家的形象，总算赢得了一些支持。只是有人仍觉得她的语音腔调仍不自然…

第三部戏，欧萱饰演重头剧【荷兰村】的莫家老四，标致的脸旦配上迟钝的脑筋、傻气的笑容配上一口硬邦邦的华语，却异常合拍，如鱼得水；随着【荷兰村】剧情的发展，众街坊已经深入民心，剧里的温馨笑话，有不少就是因莫晶晶而起的，这位傻大妹也逐渐赢得了观众的疼爱。

首次演出长篇剧，而且是新传媒40年来最长篇的电视剧（据知现在剧本已经写到150集了，
仍欲罢不能），感觉是…

“拍得很愉快，跟姐姐啊、全家人一起相处很舒服，6个月听起来很长，但其实时间过得很快！”

有没有什么难忘的、亲热的镜头？
“嗯…很亲热倒没有，只是跟陈泓宇有个嘴对嘴的镜头，就这样咯（比了个亲吻手势），没什么的。”比手势的样子，非常晶晶。
陈泓宇饰演失忆富家子，与晶晶情投意合。孪生的精明姐姐燕燕（许美珍饰演）一心横刀夺爱从中破坏，而晶晶却还相信姐姐是为了她好才这么做的…

戏里，晶晶总是被骂，也被众姐姐管得最严，像是交朋友啊、上街啊什么的，都要得到大姐莫婉婉的批准。这跟欧萱的成长背景，完全相反。
“噢，我从小到大上街都没有curfew的（宵禁），父母给我很大的自由，我也学会对自己负责，做什么事都会思前想后…所以都没有必要去管我，哈。”

欧萱来自小家庭，有一个哥哥、一个姐姐，“他们都比较文静，不像戏里聒噪的兄弟姐妹，哈…”

莫家六姐弟性格各异，欧萱最喜欢谁？
“嗯…很难说啊，每一个都有自己的优缺点，好像美珍的角色，虽然为达到目的会不择手段，但对家人很关心；像大姐整天骂人，却又很疼大家…我想，最好有一个综合所有人的优点的咯…就是要像大姐一样可以照顾家人、像三姐有精明头脑、像四妹很温柔、像小弟有点顽皮…全部加在一起就是一个很好的兄弟或姐妹了，呵。”

刚刚开开镜的【城市英雄】，对于剧中许多演员来说，意义非凡，有的视为“平反”之作，有的却因此剧而“堕落”。

平反1：李铭顺

刚刚以 【有情有义】中自私自利的歹角何平让人恨得咬牙切齿的李铭顺，这回演出一个“百分百好人”，而且是正气凛然、有求必应又心软的英勇警察呢！

这已经是铭顺第二次演警察，上一回是【城市双雄】（跟汉玮合作）。
对于警察，铭顺有独到的见解：“…警察就像艺人一样，为了照顾形象，很多事不能做的。”例如…“吸烟！乱过马路！”

是的，人们总爱做些无伤大雅的小坏事，但是作为城市英雄，对不起，没有这个权力。
不过，铭顺还是很喜欢穿警察制服，因为－－“很man！”

平反2：欧萱

在新传媒的第一部电视剧 【九层糕】中，新人欧萱以骄横跋扈、有IQ没EQ的女强人范可可的角色，令人留下深刻印象。

这回演出老土的四眼护士，整天穿着格子衬衫，她不但不嫌造型丑，还笑得好开心：“可可那样的角色很难演啊，因为要坏又不敢太坏…不过这次好了，终于可以演个大好人了！哈哈！”

这位大好人，最后还穿起了警察制服，当起正义天使呢！

平反3：林梅娇

近来频频以牙尖嘴利、尖酸刻薄的时髦八婆角色（【欲望街车】）出击的林梅娇，这次成了刻苦耐劳、逆来顺受、任劳任怨的传统妇女。

她遇人不淑，嫁给赌徒（黄文永饰演），最后为了救儿子还被刺死！如此悲惨、催人落泪的命运，必定一洗梅娇那恶婆娘的形象。

你看，变成了街坊阿嫂的梅娇，连眼神都是这样的无助，我见犹怜。

堕落1：林湘萍

最令人大跌眼镜的“堕落天使”，就是甜姐儿林湘萍了。出道以来，湘萍演出的角色不是温柔善良（【顶天立地】）、就是苦命凄凉、最“坏”就是爱撒娇的刁蛮姑娘。但是，这回，不得了，她竟然成了－－古惑女，而且还是街头党的大姐大，打架闹事样样来！她的党羽包括黄玉霞、吴政于，和叶俊岑是死对头。

“我真的很高兴能接到这个角色，还在香港拍【法内情】的时候，就把所有古惑仔古惑女的电影、书刊搬了回来慢慢看，还找了发型师染了这个街头最IN的红发。”看湘萍踌躇满志，就知道她对这部戏的重视。

这次要演得这么坏，还要破坏铭顺和妃丽，不怕被人骂？不怕甜姐儿名声不保？

堕落2：苏志成

美声组合“梦飞船”的成员苏志成，在第一部电视剧 【敢敢做个开心人】中以憨厚傻气、动不动唱rap的小伙计“苏东”，逗得许多小朋友好开心。

但是现在苏东“变脸”咯，演个贫嘴滑舌、心术不正、骗财骗色的斯文败类，简直是“儿童不宜”。

堕落3：黄文永

从十多年前的成名作 【雾锁南洋】的老实苦工阿水开始，黄文永老实好人的形象就深入民心。

就算在 【敢敢做个开心人】中演出贪小便宜的黄金来，也是个善良的小人物。较早前在【星梦情真】，文永成了风流唱片界大亨；而到了本剧，文永又进一步堕落为无耻赌徒，偷拐抢骗无所不干，甚至还被当警察的儿子（吴振宇饰演）亲手送入牢房。

问文永，喜欢演好人还是坏人？
“无所谓咯，最坏的都演了，还有什么好怕的？！”

虽然在唯一的作品【九层糕】里演反派，欧萱还是赢得了“最受欢迎新人”。其实她认为最强的劲敌是－－“吴镇宇，因为他曝光率是蛮高的，而且每个杂志、各方面都预测他会赢，我自己也看好他。”

第一次出席红星大奖，感觉是“很紧张，看到很多人上台领奖，也会希望自己能上台。”
欧萱是从报业传讯“过档”来新传媒的，是否觉得自己“来对了”？
“我也很感谢他们栽培了我，…我自己也有努力吧…”
